I just finished building my table for my track and I am considering getting away from the standard Tomy Wallpack and wiring the each lane separately. Since I race T-jets and magnet cars, I am considering having the option to switch to either 22v or 18v. What are some ideas for power sources? Has anyone built their own power supply? Any ideas will be appreciated.

Stan,

I use and recommend the power supply available from http://www.horacing.com

They are 10amp, and adjustable up to 20 (or 22??) volts, and about $150 per unit, cheaper than what it would cost to build one.

I have 3 that I use for my 6lane Scorpion BuckTrack (and use 1 of the supplies when running on my 4lane Tomy track).

However, with that said, their may be an even better alternative.

Our club, MHOSA, recently went to Kansas to race the MOKAN club.

They use a Pyramid power supply which is 22volts and 35amps, and it's ONLY $150 (effectively the same volts/amps as my 3 supplies in series for $300 LESS than I paid).

However, it's not adjustable, but the club has a member who installs a potentiometer to make it adjustable.

I'm trying to get the contact information (and potentiometer info) from MOKAN.

As soon as I do, I'll pass it along.

A. G. & G. Hobby and Electronics sells adjustable power supplies. Best prices too!
Both 18 and 24 VDC with plenty of amps.
See: http:www.slotcars.org/hodra

Stan, for your specifc uses, I'd strongly recommend the MG PS10AD adjustable power supply (0-20volts, 10amps). Reasonably priced ($125 plus shipping), and works very well for nearly all H.O. applications.

You can order one from either AG&G; Hobby or
HO Racing.

If you're not into super-amp-suckers, check out your local hobby shop for train power supplies. Adjustable, affordable.

I'm using an antique.

It's an American Flyer Power Supply. 0-18 volts 9.5 amps. BUT, it's AC, so I have a full-wafe rectifier and capacitor as well. the price was right, it was in my parent's attic.

Chris,
Take that A.F. power supply to a swap meet, and you will find you can get more than enough money for a good quality H.O. slot track power supply like above.

That American Flyer transformer is worth some cash dude- I have a monster Trainmaster Lionel transformer from my 1950 set that would power my slot track no problem, but don't dare abuse it...

Thanks for the info., guys. I also saw a Radio Shack power supply on someone's web site and it sells for $99.97. It is 0 - 30V, with 5 amps of current. I would like to find a used one to save on $$$. Thanks for the info.

Keep in mind that a "used" one may cost you more in the long run depending on how many hours are on the unit. New is the way to go.

Stan, I'm currently using the 10 amp - 20 volt MG PS10AD on my 64' 4 lane Tomy Track I run everything from Tjets to RO without any problems. This is the unit that GMan posted with the picture. The total price with shipping is $124.00 + $16.00 = $140.00 I purchased my from www.horacing.com or call George Victor @ (201)767-6767

I have 4 Tomy/Aurora wall packs plugged into a power strip and 4 terminal tracks, one for each controler/driver. There is 37' of 4 lane track. No dead spots and no power surges.

What am I missing?

Please tell me. I admit to being a simple guy. If I spend all this extra money I want to know what is being gained. Please answer soon as I will no longer be a BB member after the 15th of May.

I've got a mega-wall pack from HOExpress on order, it puts out 18Volts at 2 amps, for $30.00. There's a pretty good thread on this subject on the Planet of Speed -- I'll update how well the HOExpress power pack works on that board.

May 15th: it came in today's mail. After splicing in a Tomy plug, I tried it out and there is WAY more power than my split lane setup.

Aurora Fan,

I can tell you what you're missing, from a mathematical standpoint now, and sometime before the 15th with more info:

I'm also running a Tomy wall pack per lane, and they do run at 22volts, as indicated. However, the total AMPERAGE available to each lane on your (our) setup is 0.32 amps. On a system like Jeff the Notorious Q runs, there's 2.5 amps per lane. This gives him enough power to run modified cars with hot armatures and strong magnet sets -- cars that will barely move at the power we've got.

I've got a mega-wall pack from HOExpress on order, it puts out 18Volts at 2 amps, for $30.00. There's a pretty good thread on this subject on the Planet of Speed -- I'll update how well the HOExpress power pack works on that board.

A couple of other good reasons to switch to a power supply with more available amps:

~ Your cars will run cooler with less overheating problems. Amp-starved armatures run hotter and wear out quicker.

~ Your pickup shoes will typically last longer due to less arcing (especially true with battery power).

Try ebay. You may be able to find a very good deal on a power supply. I managed to find a 9-18 Volt, 8 amp supply for $60 (shipping included). I have had the unit for two years, and it works very well.

Try power supply surplus companies. I got a link to some place out on the east coast off this board at one time. They had a 20-24 V adjustable, 10A linear supply (important to DC motors, ask Maddman) for $35.00 + shipping ($10-20). If I find the receipt, I will post the phone number. The guy there knew what I was after and hooked me up. I'll look for the receipt, but in the meantime, look on the 'net for surplus, or resellers.

Big Krash

Edit -
STAY AWAY FROM TRAIN SUPPLIES....THEY LEAK AC POWER. I went round and round about why my cars fried up. The !#^!&*@#^&*!@ power supply is why! I bought a $100 + supply for trains and it cost me 4 cars! This board help me determine it was the supply.

Found the credit card statement. The place I bought it from is called Allied Action LTD in Rochester, NY. Try yellowpage.com or something similar for the phone number. Total for the supply was 37.20, including shipping.

Later....
